Queen Meira
Meira Sofia. (née Wexler)
- Her Majesty Queen Meira
- The Queen Mother
(Maria) Meira Sofia Santos Wexler was born in Ansbach and lived a very dismal childhood. Born to a half Cuban half Israeli mother and a pure German father, she became the object of her father’s growing madness as Wilhelm came to believe that Meira could never be his child. It was clear that her father didn’t love her. Meira was chastised by Wilhelm for aspects she has no control over. Her father saw her gender as a nuisance and the fact that she walks with a painful limp, which obstructed Meira from doing strenuous tasks and became a big insecurity of hers. She was called useless often enough that whenever the word was said around her, she would flinch as a reaction.
Meira endured an austere, isolated childhood and envied her cousins who could run freely and happy in the family backyard. She often wished she had siblings and that her mother survived the horrible accident. Her most vivid memory of her mother and the one that replays in her dreams at night, was when Meira wore a black dress under the heavy rain, as the priest spoke in an uncommon accent about death, whilst her mother’s coffin descends below the earth. She doesn’t remember the accident at all and can only summon a dreadful feeling of overwhelming pain and the bright white walls of the hospital. Meira and Wilhelm were told by the doctor that she would make a full recovery, but her father was not convinced. And he was right, Meira recovered from the cuts and bruises, but she would never walk without a limp in the remainder of her time.
Although Wilhelm held no ounce of affection for his daughter, Meira was well provided for when it came to education. Her father warned her once that disappointing him further would bring her no joy, therefore she did her very best to stay on top of her studies. She attained excellence in almost every subject she came to study, especially in medicine. With her talent and intellect, Meira was offered a place at GKT School of Medical Education in London to pursue a higher education focusing on medicine.
She became one of the most successful students and when she was twenty-four, she met King George while partying with the elites of London. Meira appeared far more beautiful and alluring than anything in George’s life and he adored her from the moment he saw her. To his shock and delight, she felt similarly and they were married within a matter of months after George’s wife died in childbirth. Meira soon fell pregnant, but George took the news with a bright smile on his lips as he doted on Meira even more.
